BMW Victoria and MINI Victoria - Winter Inspection

WHY YOU SHOULD PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR THE WINTER MONTHS AHEAD

You wouldn't dream of facing winter's ice, snow and sleet without a coat, gloves and other cold-weather gear, would you? Your car deserves the same level of protection.

Unless you live in a sun belt region, winter is the most damaging season for your car. During the winter months, your car's paint, tires, glass, plastic and other surfaces will be at the mercy of the elements, including wind, rain, sleet, snow, sand, gravel, cinders, salt and road oil.

Fall is your best opportunity to inspect and prepare your car with a protective layer, giving your car a fighting chance. Your car's paint, tires, leather and rubber trim all need touching up in the fall, even if you have cared for them all summer. If you didn't prepare your car before winter, don't worry. There are new products available to help you keep your car clean and protected.

Change Your Tires before the cold does - Click to open

Breaking Distance

On icy roads, winter tyres can bring your car to a halt a staggering 11 metres faster than summer tyres. As if the possibility of saving your life wasn't enough, this increase in braking performance could also save you money on repaired bodywork and increased insurance premiums in the case of an unnecessary accident.

BMW winter tires

The rubber compounds in high performance tires and all season tires begin to change at 7°, resulting in reduced contact with the road. Special rubber compounds in cold weather tires allow the tread to remain soft and flexible at low tempatures. This flexible tread, patterned with grooves, block (cells), and sipes (slits) grips snow and increases road surface contact to improve traction.

Seal the paint.

If your car will be exposed to extreme winter conditions, the best protective coating is a paint sealant (synthetic wax). A special winter paint sealant is equipped to shield against water and road salts. The polymers used in modern paint sealants cross-link, creating a barrier that's more difficult for water, road salts and chemicals to penetrate. A high quality paint sealant will last five to six months, providing more than enough protection for the winter season.

Keep your car clean.

Your car is more likely to be scratched during winter due to all of the potential debris on the road. As moisture penetrates deep scratches and chips in your car's paint and repeatedly freezes and thaws, it weakens and eventually cracks surrounding paint. This allows oxidation to rapidly set in. A quick and easy way to reduce paint damaging oxidation caused by winter road damage is to wash your car as often as possible and inspect for paint chips and scratches. When found, seal new paint chips with a paint sealant.

Treat the interior.

Winter is also hard on leather interiors. Cold, dry air pulls the moisture from leather, so it's important to treat leather prior to the onset of freezing temperatures. Once the daytime temperature dips below the freezing point the leather will not accept conditioners. Although the surface will look good, you have not provided moisture to the hide. We have selected special interior products that are designed to be the most effective for your cars leather and leatherette seats.

Steps to take to ensure your car is ready.

  1. Don't put off any service maintence, if your car is due. The cold weather will be hard even if your car is well prepared. Any parts that have not been lubricated preserved and prepared will most likely fail and get noisy during this time of the year.
  2. Check the cooling system for coolant strength and age. Water pumps and engine blocks are lubricated and protected from corrosion by the chemicals in the coolant mix. A lack of lubrication will result in expensive failures of these items in the future.
  3. Replace the windshield wiper blades. Put winter windshield washer fluid in the windshield washer reservoir. In the cold and dark season you will depend on your wipers more than ever.
  4. Service the battery (clean the battery terminal ends and add distilled water) and load-tested to check its ability to hold a charge. If the battery is usually one of the first parts that fail in the winter once it is more than 5 years old or if it is not serviced regularly
  5. Check the tire pressure, thread depth and condition of the winter tires. Air contracts with cold and the tires may become low as the temperature drops. Only winter tires with more than 4 millimeters of thread depth have the effect desired.
  6. Check air pressure in the spare tire and that all the proper tire-changing equipment is in the trunk.
  7. Check the lights, heater and defroster. Adjust if necessary.
  8. Check the fuel filter and the water separator. Water will freeze in the fuel line and result in a no start situation.
  9. Check the brakes and service pads and calipers. Brake parts operate in the elements and are constantly exposed to salt, water and dirt. Keeping them in proper running order will prevent pre mature brake wear and constant brake noise.
  10. Check the function of all parts of your car in a test drive and fault code read out. This check performed by a specialist may uncover other items that need attention before we give the car back to you.

It is our goal to provide you with a trouble free driving experience in the winter and prepare your car in a way that allows you to use all its features and systems.
